Institution Overview
Nestled in the foothills of the North Georgia mountains, Dalton State College offers a number of high-demand bachelor's degrees in addition to associate and technical degree programs. Dalton State is located in the city of Dalton, known as the center of the nation's carpet manufacturing industry. The campus is situated in a beautiful and well-maintained setting on 141 acres. The newest addition to the college is The James E. Brown Center, a 25,000 square foot Center for Continuing Education building named for former Regent James E. Brown.
More than 4,500 traditional and non-traditional commuter students at Dalton State come from a 12-county service area and some 38 foreign countries. The average student age is 24, and females comprise 62 percent of the student population. Dalton State College students may choose from ten bachelor's degree programs offered through the divisions of Business, Education, Social Work, and Natural Sciences and Mathematics. The College also offers 68 associate's degrees, and 42 career/certificate programs.
Dalton State College also offers a wide range of non-credit courses, adult literacy programs, and other continuing education activities to meet the needs of the residents of the surrounding northwest Georgia region.
The College’s convenient location near Interstate 75 makes it a desirable institution for students from throughout the northwest sector of Georgia. The campus is within easy reach of wilderness areas, trout streams, hiking trails and state parks in North Georgia and East Tennessee.
With 85 percent working full or part-time, students may schedule classes during the day, evening and on weekends to accommodate their work schedules. Even with the demands of school and work, many students find time to participate in the college's extracurricular offerings. A full program of co-curricular activities includes more than 25 student organizations, a student government association and intramurals. The newly-renovated Bandy Gymnasium features a new Fitness Center, a heated indoor pool, basketball courts and a weight room. Fine arts and student life committees sponsor free theatrical productions, guest speakers, musicians, and other cultural events.
Dalton State has proven to be a leader in international education programs, with active faculty and student participation in the University System of Georgia's Study Abroad Program.
Dalton Junior College was chartered in 1963, opened in 1967, and was renamed Dalton College in 1987. The college became Dalton State College in 1998.
